Medical assistants perform routine tasks of office and clinics to maintain efficiency in offices of physicians, chiropractors, podiatrists and others. They are different from physician. A medical assistant require investigation, diagnosis and treatment of patients under the supervision of a physician. Many factors affect the duties of medical aide including location and size of practice and discipline of doctors. Where practices are small, medical aide are often called "generalists" with medical and administrative tasks. They will report directly to the office manager or doctor. On the other hand, most often in large practice specializes in a specific area and is continuing under the supervision of department administrators. Some administrative functions include: greeting patients, answering phones, maintaining medical records, completing insurance forms, correspondence, arrangements, setting up hospital admission and laboratory services, and managing billing. These programs can be found in vocational and technical colleges, vocational schools and post-secondary institutions. Community and Junior Colleges also have medical aide programs. One year is required to obtain a diploma or certificate programs through secondary education and 2 years gives an associate's degree. The program covers wide range of training in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, typing and transcription, record keeping, accounting and insurance processing. They also learn laboratory techniques, diagnostic procedures, drugs and drug-related principles, the administration of medicines and basic first aid. They will also explore practical for offices, communication with patients, health laws and ethics. A course may be necessary to implement the person in accredited programs to receive valuable experience in health care, such as offices and hospitals. Employers prefer to hire aides with experience or those who have passed a national exam to ensure proper certification and experience.
