The Challenges and Pitfalls of Airline Captains

Young pilots and aviation trainees alike dream of becoming an airline captain. In the United Kingdom, airline captains typically need to have a decade or more of experience in the airline industry before settling into the captain’s chair. As well, captains usually have to exert an extraordinary amount of patience in rising to such a high level as there are many pilots waiting to ascend the airline ranks. However, the large number of pilots waiting for captain positions in the UK is only one of the challenges a pilot faces in advancing their career. By recognising these challenges, an aspirant to the captain’s chair can work on their skills and manage these issues before they become problems. One of the major challenges for airline captains is learning to delegate responsibility to fellow staff members. First officers, trainee pilots, and flight attendants alike need to help ease the pressure off of captains in terms of pre-flight checks and customer service. However, airline captains have risen through the ranks and are used to doing these things as part of a team. A good airline captain learns quickly that their role is to be a leader and to be decisive in case of emergencies. Younger professionals in need of seasoning can do a lot of the administrative tasks required before, during, and after flights. Another challenge for airline captains comes in building a strong flight team. Many captains have young co-pilots and other flight crew members, which mean that there may be a generational gap between the veteran captain and his youthful professionals. Airline captains will usually find that time is best solution to this challenge, as airline crews get comfortable with each other after a few weeks of repeated flight. However, a captain should also feel free to be outgoing with his staff and look for ways to relate to younger professionals. A third pitfall of the airline captain position in the United Kingdom is the increasing amounts of regulatory and administrative tasks that they have to take on. As pilots age, the government’s regulatory body requires increased scrutiny on physical and mental condition. Airline captains often have to perform physical tests every six months to maintain their position and their certification. As well, airline captains are ultimately responsible for all of the administrative tasks that they perform. Many airline captains delegate this to junior pilots, which mean that a captain needs to look over the materials and affix their name. Captains need to take this challenge in stride, as it is meant for the safety and security of everyone in the airplane.

Studying for the Police Exam

I want to talk to you about studying for the police exam. There are a lot of people out there that are good police officers. They know how to handle themselves and they know how to create a safe society that people are looking for. Often these great people that show tremendous potential can't handle the style of the exam they have to pass. The exams you would of taken at school are designed to measure aptitude, but since the police are public servants with extra powers, the test has to challenge you in other areas. The test is designed to figure out what kind of person you are and whether that fits in with what a police officer should be. I'm going to talk to you about studying for the police exam. The test isn't going to be simple questions on laws and conduct by police officers. That would be how they measure aptitude. The police force isn't looking for people that can memorize a lot of different facts. The test is designed to make you think about various scenarios that are a little unorthodox or outside the box. Inevitably, they have to know what you're going to do in tough situations and what you'll end up doing. Studying for the police exam is an understanding of the laws and police conduct, not the laws themselves. You want to understand how they're applied. If you see a married couple getting into a verbal argument on the street, what do you do as a police officer? This is the type of questions you'll be faced with.

Choose a Career by Software Specialty

I was recently asked for career advice by an unemployed design engineer. It actually caught me off guard because I always thought of engineers as among the most employable people out there. They usually are degreed individuals with great problem solving skills. I know engineers can major in different disciplines and often get specific degrees in chemical, electrical, mechanical and also many other areas. Most that I have met seem to have the two traits I believe are desirable in any employee: organizational skills and problem solving abilities. Here is where it gets a little tricky though. My client had 8 years using one particular simulation software. It was one of two or three most often used in his industry, so when he interviewed with a company using a different software application, he needed to sell himself as able to quickly become proficient in that program. Not an impossible task, but he was competing against others who could claim to "hit the ground running". My first reaction was why not learn all the top software? As he pointed out, because it can take hundreds and sometimes thousands of hours of training and actually using a powerful software to become proficient at it.This issue prompted me to start thinking about the best way for people to prepare themselves for employment in an area where they might be using software to perform a large part of their job. would it be best to try and learn the basics of two or three of the most widely used programs, or better to become as proficient as possible in one? First, let's take a quick look at some of the larger employment sectors and see if we can't list a few of the competing software companies in each sector. Engineering/Design. One type of program used is CAD, an acronym for computer aided design. Three of the larger ones in use are Catia, SolidWorks, and Unigraphics. Business/Enterprise. These are softwares used to run large companies or enterprises or even just certain aspects of enterprise. SAP, and Oracle are good examples. Accounting/Small business. Peachtree and Quickbooks come to mind.I am going to go out on a limb here. Based on experience in recruiting and SAP training, I believe it is best to become an expert in one software program or even in one specialized area of a software. The old adage of "jack of all trades and master of none" is unlikely to land you a prime position in a competitive employment landscape. Your expertise in a given area may even carry over into associated areas in the eyes of a company.Of course their are dozens of employment areas and dozens times dozens of softwares to go with them. I'll assume that you already have an idea of what type of work you want to be doing. Let's just say you are working in or looking for a job in small business accounting or bookkeeping. Do you intend to stay in your current geographic area? If the answer is yes, then do your research and try to find out what program is used most in your area. Learn that program if you want to increase your chances of finding a job. If you are looking to relocate, then your research should focus on discovering the most widely used in the whole nation or area where you hope to relocate to. You can also use other criteria when making a decision on what software program. Does one pay more than the other? Has one been around longer and is the company that makes it secure? Is it only used by one mega company and no others? For my engineering friend my advise to him was to take more training in the program he had used for so long. His value was in knowing that software and additional training only strengthened his value.

Fight a Job Loss Successfully in 6 Steps

100,000 jobs have been lost around the world in this year alone. Some are struggling to save a job while others are going through emotional turmoil, financial distress, breaking relationships and staring at a bleak future. The dreaded “Pink Slip” is happening faster than we can imagine. Many will not make it to live a happier life, but some will weather the storm and come out stronger and evolved. Accept, don’t procrastinate When recession hits employees get hit harder. Most entrepreneurs are accountable for increasing shareholders wealth and hence social objectives may take a back seat. Businesses globally view; employees are a resource that can be dispensed with in times of crisis. Moving from a platform of disbelief to one of acceptance can help to reconcile with present. This is step one of handling drastic change. Accept as you would at the loss of a near and dear one without any guilt. During a calamity, disaster strikes one and all, few escape unscathed while others are scarred. Reality spares none. Slide into discomfort zone to move into a new zone of comfort People resist change because of a perceived discomfort. A baby is reluctant to stand upright for the pain, sacrifice and effort involved. However, due to compulsions and limited options there comes a point when the baby stretches to stand up right. With every successive effort the confidence grows, leading to independence. The key to dealing with fear of failure is placing one small step into zone of discomfort and gradually building your new comfort zone. Course correction A seasoned mid-career professional lost his job in a down turn environment. He applied for new opportunities with little or no response. The ones in offer were not commensurate with his experience. Continuous research and net surfing helped him to look at his old interest in the area of training and development. A chance discussion with a friend led to eventual engagement as a consultant mentor commencing the start of a new found career. Be prepared to introspect, and take risks. Engage for success Our animal instinct is predatory; hence it is important to have a sense of accomplishment. Engage in activities that drain you out emotionally and physically. Accomplishment, big or small helps to restore the lost pride and hence bedroom games provide the best booster. Waking up to a new morning and looking at a new day is invigorating. Small milestones need to be established for the day so that one can get a sense of achievement even it is apparently trivial. If you like photography shoot pictures. Do what you like. People alone can help people Connect with people close to you – friends, relatives, office network, and social network. People help people, and self help is the best help, are two sides of the same coin. Losing a job does not necessarily mean losing an acquaintance. While, normal human tendency is to shun failures, these are unpredictable times and hence some sane mind and kind heart would reach out to help. Like all good salespeople know, business gets closed into an order by asking for it and not assuming it would happen. So reaching out and asking for help is the best option to find a new job, or get a good reference. Dare to dream Re cast your dream. You may have taken up a career you did not want, so do some soul searching and dream afresh. This may be the time for you to look at life and career afresh. Introspection may help find answers to the gaps that lie between what you aspired to do, vis-à-vis capabilities needed to succeed. The important thing is to translate that dream into reality and hence setting a goal to make it happen is an essential first step. Capability can be scaled up with little investment and high commitment. Steve Jobs came back to Apple and his wandering mind led to a disruptive innovation like IPOD which is a runaway success in personal entertainment system. Express the compelling, yet unstated and unfulfilled needs of others and soon you have a business proposition. Like heart beats which appear as a series of spikes in an ECG report, some of us will have ailments and hence the spikes will vary but spikes will be there till the day it becomes a straight line indicating death. Similarly our careers will be subject to waves due to external and internal factors, and hence a set of achievable actions blending short term needs and long term goals can help mitigate our problems.

Investment Banking Interview - Here Is What to Do If You Want to Succeed

Investment banking may be the most competitive position to apply for after graduation from University. It is not unusual to have 500 to 1,000 resumes for only 25 to 40 vacancies. How well you do on your investment banking interview determines whether or not you make the short list for those few vacancies. Here is some advice on how to stand out from the crowd so you will be selected for an investment banking position.Show interest and dedicationInvestment banking is a job that averages 80+ hours of work each week. Candidates who show the motivation and desire to put in the necessary hours will easily make the short list. No company wants to spend the time and money to hire and train an applicant that will get burned out on the hours and quit in less than a year. If you are able to stress that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job your resume will end up in the short list.Be preparedThe majority of the questions you will be asked in your interview will be technical in nature. This will range from calculation of formulas to solving case studies. Since this is the meat of your interview questions, you should focus most of your preparation on how to answer these questions. Spend time reviewing how to calculate formulas and practice several different case studies. Companies want to see how well you can solve problems. Your ability to answer these questions correctly will be a determining factor on whether or not you will be considered for the position. Are you a good fit?You will be asked several questions about why you want to be an investment bank. Your answers will allow the company to measure whether or not your expectations for the job meet the requirements of the job. If they are not a good fit then you will never be selected for the job. Another question is what are you long term goals as an investment banker. The company is trying to gauge how serious you are about the position and working for the company long term. Companies want to hire people that will be with them for a long time instead of somebody who are there for a short period to get experience and then move on to other opportunities.Do you have the right character?Make sure you answer every question in your investment banking interview factually and truly. If you stretch your answers because you think that is what the interviewer is expecting in your answers, you lose credibility. If you are willing to lie during an interview, you will probably do much worse in dealing with the bank's clients. No company wants to hire someone who is of questionable character. Do not risk your chance of being hired because you embellish your answers.Investment banking is a one of the highest paid positions in the financial industry. For this reason many people attempt to enter this position after university. Follow this advice and you will succeed in your quest to be hired as an investment banker.

The Critical Role of Hospital Purchasing Agents

Hospitals are institutions that offer health care services that would provide medication and treatment of people who are sick, with the help of their medical staff, equipment and medicine. The medical staff, which includes specialists, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical technologists, and many others all work together for the benefit of the patients. All of these staff works cooperatively to achieve the goal of making the patient obtain treatment for their illnesses and maintain a better health. It is important to note that their job is not an easy task to do. Hospital personnel even have to work overtime, in shifting schedules, even during holidays and special occasions just to make sure patients get the service they need in urgent times. Their corroborative efforts are likewise very important for the smooth operation of health care centers. For example, doctors or specialists would often need the results of medical examinations from the medical technologists to be able to further conclude on what illness a patient has and how to provide treatment for it. If the patient is then hospitalized due to his or her condition, the nurses then will take care of him or her by checking the patient’s condition every now and then while the doctor is tending to another patient’s needs. Among the medical staffs that are employed in hospitals are purchasing agents. They are responsible for buying and approving the acquisition of goods and services that are needed by the hospital. They look for reliable suppliers and vendors of quality medical goods, equipment and medicine at reasonable prices. Not only do they look for sources of these goods, they also negotiate the prices for these goods so that they may be obtained at a more cost efficient value. They are required to become eloquent in administering negotiations with suppliers. Without hospital equipment, it is impossible to carry on important activities in the hospital. This is to emphasize the value of work rendered by hospital purchasing agents. Their role is equally important with all the rest of the hospital team. Moreover, they are also responsible for knowing and reviewing the technical specifications and quality of the materials needed. As a result, they are supposed to be familiar with the products used by the hospital industry and their specifications, as the doctors and nurses should. Not only that, they are the ones who make sure that there are ample supplies of the necessary materials to operate a hospital. Finally, hospital purchasing agents are the people who determine the quantity and schedule of the deliveries. By this, they should be updated with the stocks of the materials so that they can determine whether or not they will make a purchase during a time interval. Outwardly, the responsibility of purchasing agents may seem as less significant as compared to that of the doctors and nurses that are in contact with the patients, but in reality, their job is equally important as the former; and if not, greater. Simply put, they are the ones who equip the medical staff with the materials they need to complete the health services that are being given to the patients.

Here's How to Succeed at Your Investment Banking Interviews

Investment banking is the most financially lucrative position for any university graduate. There are many people vying for the few openings each year in this industry. Graduates who are able to land one of the prime positions have mastered their investment banking interview. Successful candidates are the ones who prepare for their interview and anticipate the questions they might be asked and how to best answer them.Questions that you will be asked will be either fit questions or technical questions. Technical questions are either right or wrong just like two plus two will always equal four. Investment banking companies ask technical questions to see how well you know the formulas and whether or not you are paying attention in class. The fit questions are what separates the potential hires form those that are rejected. Companies ask fit questions to make sure you will be a good addition to their company. Fit questions are sometimes referred to as "the airport test." This tells whether or not an investment banker would feel comfortable spending several hours in the departure lounge of an airport with you.The fit questions give you an opportunity to be charming and personable and appeal to the interviewer so they will select you for an open position. How you answer a fit question is the ultimate key as to whether or not you will be hired by the company. The answer to a fit question will show your motivation and desire to work in the investment banking industry which is well known for its 80+ hour work weeks. Companies want to hire employees who show they are willing to do whatever it takes to succeed in this highly competitive industry.Fit questions give you an opportunity to accentuate your strengths and experiences that will be valuable to the company. Everyone has had many experiences in their lives and answering these questions is the chance to show how your life experiences would benefit the company. The purpose of fit questions is to put you on the spot and see how well you can think on your feet. It also prevents you from being able to spout out memorized responses to potential questions. Some of the questions that you will be asked assumes that there is no possible way for you to know the answer. What the company is evaluating is how well you can think of a way to solve the question without already knowing the answer. In most cases the interviewer will not know the answer to the question either. Now that you understand the fit questions will be the major decision factor during your interview, you should focus the majority of your preparation on these forms of questions.

How to get an internship or work placement in a translation company

With thousands of people graduating from universities, colleges and other educational institution, without solid work experience, you may find yourself in a catch 22 situation: no one wants to hire you without experience but how do you get the experience if no one wants to hire you? Working as an intern will often give you a great advantage of experiencing the real world and being able to include it on your CV. Our company, Polaron Language Services, has been offering international work placements in Melbourne, Australia, for the past 2 years and we since have hosted interns from Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, China, France, Lebanon and Poland. It's a great way for us to learn about the new generation of professional linguists and contribute to the translating and interpreting industry by letting some new blood in. I receive dozens of new applications per month and including people in our well structured internship program has become a privilege. We give people real work, with real clients but of course we do a lot of hand holding before we allow our interns to spread their wings. Most interns start by assisting our Multimedia Projects Officer or Business Development Coordinator in managing projects, checking of translations, collating databases or answering the phone. We take our interns to court to watch our interpreters at work, we also get them to review previous translations, collate glossaries and format translations. In other words, our interns do get exposed to how a translation bureau works, a rare opportunity indeed! Given the advantages and the interest our internship program attracts, I thought I'd share with you some dos and don'ts on how to go about applying for internship. I have seen some shocking applications in my time, and whilst I always respond to prospective interns' enquiries, it would be very hard for me to be convinced to take them on. We are one of the few companies in Australia that take intern applications seriously but I sometimes doubt that the interns take us seriously! So here go the tips: 1. Email the translation company finding out who is in charge of recruiting. Emailing your application to the general email will rarely be met with interest, as it is usually checked by a non-decision maker, or a person who just can't be bothered. 2. Check the spelling and grammar of your email and don't forget to attach your CV. Don't ever use the SMS shorthand for writing emails. It looks very unprofessional. 3. Do some research on the company in question so that your email doesn't sound generic or disinterested. Explain in your email why you'd want to become an intern for them. 4. Be prepared for the internship to be unpaid: after all the company will invest a lot of money in training and supporting you, and you will get a reference at the end of it. So do make sure you can afford to be an intern for several months, especially if you are going to be based in another country or even continent. 5. Check the company out. Ask about working conditions, location, insurances and working hours. See if you could be put in touch with previous interns who could tell you more not only about the company, but local attractions, accommodation and customs.  6. Follow up with a phone call and arrange for a telephone interview. It is important that you clarify any issues of concerns before you commit yourself to the internship. Ask the company about the internship program: they should be able to email you a questionnaire or a work plan, to help you in making sure you are making the right decision. 7. Check whether your training institution will endorse the internship and if so, how will they liaise with your employer. Do they have any specific requirements? 8. Follow up with an email thanking the company for their time and keep in touch regularly. Ask about a duty statement, internship plan or position description. Who will you be reporting to? How often? What happens in case of problems? Best of luck with your internships and don't forget to contact me if you have any questions! Top Tips On How To Write A Winning CV

Do Your HomeworkThere are two points I want to make here. Although the need to emphasize your most important attributes and skills to each potential recruiter remains constant, formatting trends have varied over time. The first tip on how to write a winning CV is to check what the current trend is. You can check online where there may even be free templates for you to use.A generic CV is not a winning CV. Do your research on the company to which you wish to apply for employment. Again check online. Well established companies will have their own websites. Check newspaper articles and magazines. Build on your knowledge of the company and its current needs and plans. Why?Because, even if this is your first CV, you can still tailor it to highlight the personal and professional skills you possess that will help the company meet its current and future challenges.Remember always that your CV may be one of many being reviewed as part of initial selection process. Aim to impress on the first page which brings us to the next tip on how to write a winning CV.Formatting RulesRegardless of trends, keep your CV to two pages. From my own experience in assisting blue chip companies in recruitment and selection, few recruiters read beyond page one especially if they have not been impressed by what they have read thus far.So, make sure the important relevant information is included on the first page and in a format that is easy to read. For example use formatting techniques such as bullet points and also make sure everything is aligned perfectly. Make good use of white space. Don't worry, it is amazing how much information you can get on one page.Keep it simple. You will not impress the recruiter by using fancy graphics or making your CV difficult to read. You want to create a winning CV and not one that puts off the recruiter from reading what you have to say.Stick to the standard fonts of Arial, Times New Roman or possibly Verdana. Keep the background white. It is likely that if you send your CV electronically that it will be printed off prior to interview. You certainly won't have a winning CV if you have used non standard fonts or anything else that disturbs the look of the final print out. If it is difficult to read can you guess what will happen to it?If you do send your CV in electronic format, you can make sure that it will be formatted correctly when printed by converting the document into a.pdf file. It will also look like a professional document.Use The Tools At Your DisposalThere is absolutely no excuse for spelling errors or typos. Whether you are using Word or any other modern word processor, you have access to a spell checker, so use it. Also make sure that the statements you make are grammatically correct.I'd even go a stage further. If you are in the US and you are sending your CV to the UK or vice versa then use the appropriate spelling. All of these simple tips will not guarantee you get the job. However, I can assure you that if you do submit a CV with simple errors, you are sending a message that you don't really care and that you do not pay attention to detail. And I can also assure you that your CV will end in the trash.Follow the rules and recognize what the recruiter needs and wants to know and there is nothing to stop you writing a winning CV.

Here's the Most Difficult Interview Question for Banking

Banking is a very challenging industry in which to work. People who are successful in banking have a combination of outstanding research and analytical skills, people skills and the desire to work some of the longest hours every week. In return for the long hours and the job demands, bankers can expect to receive an income well above market average. It is not unusual to have people at senior levels in banking earn over a million pounds per year in pay and bonus.Getting a job in banking is very challenging. It is not uncommon for a company to have 100 or more resumes for every opening. The banking industry has a term for the day they interview all the candidates and it is called "super day." On that day you can be subjected to over a dozen interviews with people at all different levels within the company. The process starts at 8 in the morning and can easily extend to 8 or 9 at night. The purpose of these multiple interviews is to select the one or two candidates from the 100 applicants that will be hired by the company. The interview process is the make or break point for all of the applicants. Almost every bank firm will ask you a series of technical question to ascertain that you are familiar with the formulas that are used daily in banking. The company may give you a case study and ask you to evaluate the case. The last series of question that you will be asked are fit questions to determine whether or not you will fit into the company's corporate culture. There will be one question that will be the hardest one that you will be asked during this marathon interview process. This one question will quickly separate the potential hires from the rejects. That one simple question is:"Why do you want to work in banking?"This one simple question sounds very innocuous when you first hear it. Yet the point of the question is to determine whether or not you have what it takes to be successful in the highly demanding field of banking. It also highlights whether or not you have the dedication and drive to make it in the banking industry. How you answer this one question will usually determine whether you are invited back for a second round of interviews or you are rejected on the spot. Successful candidates spend a lot of time on preparing their answer to this question. You want to emphasize your interest in the industry, how well you understand the market, what skills you bring to the position and what you are willing to do to be successful in the job. Before your interviews make sure you prepare you answer for this one question. It may be the difference between being hired and being rejected.

Technology Jobs - At The Heart Of The Digital Age

Living in 2010, its easy to take somethings for granted. Not just the important things - food, shelter and warmth - but the little things - entertainment, information and communication. These qualities have come to define the digital age, and its all thanks to people in technology jobs. Practically every type of technology job is aimed at improving the day to day working or personal life of people in the developed world. Technology recruitment is the fuel that keeps modern society running, providing both the developers of technology and the support staff who keep the rest of us on our feet. It's easy to forget that just one generation ago, computers were the size of rooms and a mobile phone was something out of Star Trek. That a database consisted of hundreds of index cards and corresponding filing cabinets. That life was, in short, much slower - not because you had less to do, but because everything had to be done physically. Its only thanks to the hard working people in technology jobs that today's marvels are possible - and are even commonplace. Leaving aside the wondrous applications many of us take for granted, the people behind the technology are tragically unacknowledged. For many, technology jobs seem unglamourous. However reality is far different from the 'great man', lone inventor style of history that popular culture loves to embrace. The truth is that every piece of technology, in every stage and aspect, is the product of a much more complicated relationship. Ask yourself, who created the internet? The answer is that it was the work of thousands of different people in different technology development teams across the world. Originally, it started as a research program from the US department of defence, as a communications network between technology institutes and universities in America. The transformation from this to today's world wide web didn't come in a single moment, but in a gradual process that was the direct result of the work of people in technology jobs. This wasn't just software developers and researchers, but hardware technicians, communications engineers and coders. How the splintered communications networks of companies, governments and universities grew into the internet is a long story that doesn't need explaining here. But it serves as a useful illustration of the nature of working in technology and the nature of technological advances. The people working on the various projects often had very little idea about the effect they would have on the world, and those outside had even less. The same could be said for any of the other gadgets that have become central to our life. The iPhone is the combination of technology developed for flat-screen televisions, desktop computers and (of course) mobile phones. Digital television was only possible because of the work of developers for computer-based video software such as MPEGs or .avi's. Computers themselves only came about because people wanted to build a better counting machine! Whilst they may seem arcane and obtuse to the rest of us, technology jobs have had an effect on the world unlike any other form of profession in the last century.

Top Tips To Write A CV That Will Impress

Before we get into some of the ways in which your CV will stand out compared to others, remember that your CV is the first impression you are going to make with potential recruiters and we all know that first impressions count so let's make it a good one. For those of you who have been in employment especially in a professional capacity there is absolutely no reason why you cannot write a CV that will impress. There is no reason why it cannot be outstanding. Let's help you by looking at the tips to write a CV that will impress and give you an edge in getting that job opportunity you are seeking.ResearchThere are two ways in which you can make research work in your favor. Firstly, check current trends and see which CV formats are being used. Although it is important to include personal details along with your education, qualifications and personal interests remember that recruiters are primarily interested in how effectively you have used what you have. Being able to demonstrate your achievements through the application of your skills set will impress more than just a list of degrees or qualifications. Look for CV examples that can help you draft yours.Spending time researching the company will also help you to write a CV that will impress by highlighting how your background experience and expertise can be applied to the current and future needs of the company. There is no doubt that structuring your CV around the needs of the recruiting organization will give you a competitive edge.Be TruthfulHaving said that please don't make it up because you think that will work in your favor. If you tell lies on your CV you have to continue the lies during interview and even beyond that. Sooner or later the lies will be discovered. This can be through any checks that are done by the company prior to offering you a position or by you failing to meet the demands of the position for which you were recruited.Use All Of The Work Experience And Skills You HaveThis is very important especially if you have recently graduated for example and you are yet to build up a credible professional portfolio. Following a number of years consulting on recruitment and selection I can tell you that recruiters and department managers are far more interested in what relevant skills you learned and how those skills can help them rather than a particular course you attended (unless it is highly specialized). The best way you can do that is by...Being Specific And Using Facts And DataPlease avoid writing bland generic statements like "great team player" or "decision maker". Remember, you want your CV to stand out. If you want to write a CV that will impress, then you need to follow this golden rule.Every time you are about to write down something you consider to be a strength such as "great team player", ask yourself how can you demonstrate that attribute succinctly and concisely. You must be able to back up your statement by writing it as a specific fact and supporting it by example. It does not need to be in great detail because if you have impressed the recruiter, you will get every opportunity to expand on the examples during the interview.Be More Than The JobYes it is the primary interest and concern of the recruiter that you have what it takes to succeed and meet the needs of the organization. However what can also impress is your other interests and achievements away from the workplace. This shows that you are capable of learning new skills or applying the skills you do have away from the workplace perhaps in helping others for example.Demonstrating that you are a more rounded individual and not solely interested in work will help to impress those who will be making the decision to hire you or not.

How To Find A New Career In 2010

We have all seen the effects of our turbulent global economy. Things are bad all over, to paraphrase an old saying. And during these tough times, many think of changing their professional situations, whether out of fear, necessity, or good old-fashioned burnout. During these times, career transition and outplacement services are two things you will probably be hearing more about. If you are getting ready to travel a new career path, then listen to the following advice, and seek the expertise of those who can help you: Take an inventory of your skills: But you're looking for a new career, aren't you? Well, if so, you are probably going to start at the bottom. However, if you can find a way to make your previous skills relevant, it could give you a huge leg up on the competition. You've heard the saying, "Don't throw out the baby with the bath water," meaning you should not ditch everything valuable based on a few minor annoyances. This could save you a lot of time, money, and frustration, if you were to heed such advice. Consider your interests: What sort of things bring out your passion? Is it music, movies, fashion? If you think long enough and hard enough you will likely be able to come up with a way to match prior skills with an industry you enjoy. You have to be creative when finding a way to make money, especially as our economies grow ever closer together. Look for areas where skill and passion coincide: Once you have found the areas where skill and passion coincide, it's time to target your job search in that direction. Outplacement services can help you through valuable training and advice for how to make a successful career transition. Determine your financial needs: To successfully undergo a career transition, it is also essential to take stock of your financial needs. What sacrifices can you afford to make in your budget to make starting over more possible? What necessities can you not leave behind under any circumstances? If we scrutinize the ways that we spend our money, we can likely find areas where cutting back is possible. This can take some of the heat off you if it becomes necessary to enter at the ground level of your new career field. Apply for internships or open positions: Once you know how much money it will take to live, and where the jobs are that will interest you, it's time to get your name out there and let your new life begin. This may mean you can find an entry-level (or slightly better) job right out of the gate, or it may mean you have to try your hand at an unpaid internship in the area where you would like to work. While this may not be possible, it can lead to a quick trip up the ladder if proper networking solutions are in place. In other words, you may welcome the cut in pay if it means you're making prestigious contacts that will enable you to achieve your long-term dreams faster. Career transition is a difficult thing. But you don't have to go it alone. Keep in mind that quality outplacement services can help you to achieve any of the above necessities. Good luck, and full steam ahead!

2010 College Grads - Did You Start Your Job Search In Your Junior Year?

A client, who is receiving a B.S. degree in Finance and Marketing this spring from a university in the mid-West, received a job offer from a prominent insurance company six weeks ago. How was this possible when according to an article published by CNNMoney.com on 11/18/2009, "This year's college graduates (2009) have a mind-boggling 40% fewer job prospects, and jobs for candidates with bachelor's degrees are expected to drop by 1% in 2010". So what was unique about my client that influenced a major corporation to extend a job offer nearly five months prior to graduation? The Benefits of an Internship! For starters, my client had a significant 'head-start' in his job search. During the summer after his sophomore year, he aggressively pursued and successfully secured an internship with the insurance company. Throughout his internship, he acquired invaluable business experience and capably interfaced with a myriad of departments, applying his MS Office skills to offload staffing activities, develop business models, and identify solutions to streamline operations. As an intern, he gained the trust and respect of management and colleagues. During the summer prior to his senior year, once again he was invited to participate in their intern program, demonstrating the same professional resolve and commitment as he did the prior year. Management was not blind to this exceptional contributor. The purpose of interning is to gain invaluable business experience, enhance one's networking, apply academics to practical business experience, and provide relevant content to one's resume. Internship is not intended as a guarantee for employment. The program is designed to hone one's business acumen and expertise in preparation for the 'real-world'.Be Proactive With Your Job Search! My client received his professional resume at the beginning of his senior year and aggressively commenced his job-search campaign. He methodically managed his search as a project, incorporating multiple channels including - social networking, a web resume, letters to corporate executives, and selective job posting boards. Of course, his resume was also sent to an executive at the corporation where he interned. What differentiated my client from other college students? Cognizant of the prevailing 'job crunch', he was proactive with his job-search starting well in advance of his classmates. He was persistent, retaining a positive attitude and projecting a demeanor that exhibited 'self-confidence'. Armed with practical and relevant business experience, he acquired a professional resume, and managed his job search as a project. Of greatest importance, the relationship, trust, and vital contribution to the insurance company during his internship ultimately paid dividends resulting in a job offer. The majority of 2010 college undergraduates will not be as fortunate. With a prevailing 10% unemployment rate, some may opt to proceed with their graduate studies. For others, working temporary, part-time, or 'freelance' opportunities while concurrently pursuing their job search may be a necessity as opposed to a choice! Remember, human nature is to explore, persevere, and embrace change! It's never too late to place a 'stake in the ground' and establish a road map in pursuit of your career!Lenny Keitel runs Hudson Valley Resumes, a premier resume writing service with a penchant for crafting impressive resumes that inspire and motivate the hiring manager through its inspirational content, clarity, and visual appeal. How To Motivate Employees With LMS Courses

When an employee begins a new job, it's critical to start off on the right foot. Employee turnover is a wasteful, costly phenomenon that happens to too many organizations. It isn't necessarily true that you're hiring "bad employees", but that once they are hired, the motivation element in the workplace may be lacking. How can you ensure that the employee you have hired fulfills the expectations and the work that you have for him/her? The answer is in the first few weeks of an employee's new term-during training.Dynamic and effective training ensures that employees understand their tasks, gives them the practice and theory they will need to do their job with excellence, and creates a greater sense of team spirit in the workplace. In fact, there is a growing trend to nurture the team spirit and true engagement aspects of training. With a learning management system (LMS) online training that treats training as a game and the participant as a motivated and interested learner, (which everyone is at the onset of a new job) Using an LMS, you can create dynamic, face-to-face training that has a game-like element, which engages and teaches at the same time.In fact, the beginning of a new position isn't the only time to implement an LMS online training course. If you have staff who are not living up to their potential and/or your standards, it might be a good time to introduce an online course. You can make the LMS online course dynamic and fun, and allow employees to complete some activities and lessons independently, while working with coworkers on other activities.

Getting The Maximum Out Of Travel Nursing

Traveling the country as a nurse expands ones skill set, helps them reach goals and gives them benefits they will only receive as a traveler. If a travel nursing career is a lifetime experience or needed to reach an important milestone, many nurses find traveling a great experience as a whole.Saving money is usually a key factor for the long-term traveler. Many travelers are able to take a year or two of assignments, close to home and pay off debt, or purchase a major item. With pay sometimes double what a nurse would make as a staff nurse and the tax free benefits saving a large sum of money monthly is easy for nurses and well worth the few years of being away from home, for many.If a nurse is interested in travel nursing jobs to experience a challenge and/or increase the profitability of a resume, new hospitals are a great place to start. Usually if a hospital is building an addition or a new location, they will want travelers until they are able to train new staff. A new hospital is great for nurses looking to work with new technology, state-of-the-art equipment or associate with staff that has break-though practices. A travel job is also a great way to get references from prestigious facilities and doctors. All of these features look well on a resume when a permanent position with higher pay is sought. When travel nursing jobs are desired because of the opportunities to see other places, the best way to approach the field is for a nurse to make a list of states that are of interest. The states should work from one side of the country to the other, and list the cities that are the best and worse choices for that state, if any. This list will do two things, it will help the recruiter see where to look for positions when a contract is almost finished, as well as keep travel costs down if the recruiter is told to concentrate on a radius near the last contract. If one starts on one side of the country and travels across to the other, they will be able to hit many states and can opt for 13-week contracts and then move on if an extension isn’t optimal. If a travel nurse job is being sought for the income opportunities, the tax free benefits will allow a nurse the ability to save or live a luxurious life-style while seeing the world. To take advantage of tax free meals, incidentals and housing a nurse needs to have a residence away from the job, that bills are being paid on while working. Most nurses get rid of their standard housing and rent a room in their hometown, or from a relative, which is the cheapest way to get the tax-free benefits. Doing this will also allow a nurse to go home and enjoy a few weeks off between contracts to see friends and family.Travel nursing is a great opportunity for those who are interested in seeing the world, without the savings account to do it with. Keeping a room or small apartment in a home state is necessary for the maximum benefits in pay and down time for a nurse. Mapping out the places one would like to travel will help a nurse and their recruiter decide what jobs are best. If a nurse takes the time to study the hospitals that offer travel nursing positions he/she will find challenging work, which is a great way to increase the magnitude of a resume.

"What Color Is Your Parachute?" A Good Choice For Finding Your True Calling

Several winters back, I had hired a strong group of performers. I worked hard at bringing out the best these folks had to offer both as individuals and as a team. I received a very positive review from my boss. He recognized my accomplishment as going beyond the call of duty when I had been taking for granted that I have a knack for running software projects on time and under budget. At the time, I was also speaking monthly for a groups tending to the needs of job seekers.  One presentation I gave really got me thinking. I called it "Finding the Ideal Career for You" making use of great content from Richard Nelson Bolles' book  "What Color is Your Parachute?" (You can check out my book review for more details.) The book contains a set of exercises great for helping people identify their transferable skills. So I put myself through these exercises as part of my prep work. The exercise is simple. Write down several paragraphs about a problem you solved recently. The problem doesn't have to be work related. It just has to be a problem you enjoyed addressing. The task is then to map the skills used to resolve the problem to the book's transferable skills matrix.I picked a challenge I faced organizing a kick off meeting and run for a marathon training team I coached. (Yes, I'm one of those overachieving weekend marathon runners who trains others to follow my insanity.) The kick off posed some unique challenges.
My fellow coach was out of town that weekend driving her daughter to college. Few of the runners had ever run long distance races and many of them were out of shape. The runners didn't all fall into one neat running pack. We had runners with paces anywhere from 9 minutes to 15 minute per mile.We had a wheelchair athlete that was cutting her teeth on a marathon for the very first time ever.
The first step was to find a substitute coach. I coaxed a buddy of mine who had coached with me on a previous season. He agreed to organize the slower paced runners. I made a bunch of phone calls looking to identify someone with experience coaching wheelchair athletes. My persistence led me to an expert that shared his smarts with me. I contacted each runner via phone or email to get them pumped about a 6am Saturday run (Ugh!) and reassure them I could coach them to the finish line. My work paid off. The kick off was a success for everyone. The next step is picking out the transferable skills from your write up and matching them into three categories: things, information and people. I got a lot more for giving this presentation that I expected. When I started mapping, I made an interesting discovery. I saw that most of my transferable skills and the ones I most enjoy using are people skills. I had used my persuasion skills to recruit a substitute coach. I used people skills to find someone in my circle of contacts who could advise me on coaching a wheelchair athlete. At the kickoff I delivered a kick off speech to the runners inspiring them and convincing them to stick with the program.I picked several other problems to write up and came to similar results. This is not what this computer science graduate degree holder expected after spending most of his career as a programmer, software architect, and technology leader. It caused me to spend some more time reviewing if I was on the right track in my career. I had not done so in a while mainly because I had been so busy "making a living" that I failed to stop, review and reflect. I'll write another post soon to discuss where this all took me. Lot's of fun.I highly recommend this book for those of you struggling with the question, "What do I want to do with the rest of my life?" So many people have relied on this book for it's job hunting advice which is excellent while failing to turn to the last section which is just as good or better for finding a career that fits you. It maps out a systematic approach with very clear steps defined for confirming your new chosen career. This process includes use of informational interviews as a way to confirm your findings and possibly even land that next position.Consider leaving a comment at CareerJockey.org. I'd love to see if this worked out for you.

Distance Learning: Mba Through Distance Education

Distance learning or distance education has become a highly advantageous option for the people who can not attend regular classes or lectures due to a variety of reasons like time, work and other commitments. A good course, completed through distance learning, has proved to be beneficial for many working executives to ascend the ladder of success in their organizations.  Distance learning is a type of education where the student does not have to be present physically; instead, he/she can communicate with the teacher through any of the channels available today and that too at his/her convenience. For instance, the student can clarify his/her doubts through e-mail, chat, phone, or simply posting the question on the university website's student's page. Distance learning is becoming more and more popular everyday. With increasing number of institutes offering multiple courses through different universities.  Among all these distance learning courses, the most popular is, of course, the   Master of Business Administration. Better known as MBA.   This course has managed to grab the highest number students as compared to other courses.  For, it has no entrance tests, group discussions, personal interviews or any other rigorous process which does not allow the student to study his/her desired course.  MBA through distance learning is in no way inferior to a regular MBA course.  The degree is the same, the status is the same and last but not the least, the opportunities are just as unlimited as a regular MBA course can offer. Another advantage of distance learning MBA is that it is well accepted by today's corporate world.                 The channels of education in distance learning are more or less similar in every course. They include:  1) CD-Rom, 2) e-mail , 3) online learning or e-learning, 4) video-conferencing, 5) webcasting, and of course, 6) the traditional printed study material.                 The evaluation process is also quite simple and fair in distance learning.  Assignments and projects in distance learning MBA are made pretty lengthy to make students do extensive study and research.

Some Adventurous Dream Jobs You Can Take Up

Most of the jobs available in the market nowadays are although dependable, but are monotonous at the same time. They all seem like the same work day in and day out. In case you are one of the types who loves venturing out and doing adventurous things, there are some interesting career opportunities out there that are all but monotonous. You'll be thrilled to know that some of them are just as dependable as the desk jobs and lucrative too. Some good examples of such adventures and intriguing professions are Alaskan fishing, military work or a career as a guiding hunter. If outdoor games attract you and you are an avid game hunter, you'll be delighted to know that you can in fact get paid to hunt every day. Becoming a hunting guide is an exciting career opportunity for those already into game hunting and having some experience under their belt. There are regular schools which run programs to train professional hunting guides. These guides gain knowledge about the principle areas where the game can be found. They also receive training to protect people whom they are given responsibility of, in the event something goes wrong in the wilderness. Unfortunately, the salary as a hunting guide is not very appealing. However if you are a hard-core hunting enthusiast, a career in hunting will be job perk in itself. A career in military will not only provide you with exciting and constantly varying work opportunities but will also reward you with a stable career and countless benefits for you as well as your family. All three departments of military, whether it is sea-based Navy, air-based air force or the land-based army, provide a career that is full of exhilarating experiences day after day. This is because the job itself would require you to be always ready to act, alert and clued into the situation each moment of the day. The Army reserve and the U.S. Army form the foundation of the US’ military land operations. A more technically inclined individual would instead be attracted to a dynamic career in the US air force or the U.S. Navy, both of which are well-known for their forward thinking and updated machinery and technological advancements. On the other hand if you're interested in getting employed at the most risky and profitable workplace, you should consider a job of fishing in Alaska. A career as an Alaskan fisherman is a very difficult task as the crew members seldom leave their current positions. Nevertheless, anyone who manages to successfully secure a fishing crew job would vouch for the fact that how lucrative job being a fishing crew member can be. The wages are normally based on a percentage share (ranging from 1.5 to 10% for beginners) of the catch earnings. However you must remember that you should obtain a signed copy of the work agreement detailing your job responsibilities and salary before heading out to sail.

In This Economy, Networking is More Important Than Ever

In a Forbes.com article entitled “How to Headhunt the Headhunters”, a recruiter is quoted as saying that he gets about 100 résumés a week, but rarely looks at any of them.  What?  A recruiter that doesn’t even look at the resumes he is being sent?  How can that be?  That’s because the number of unsolicited resumes a recruiter receives grows exponentially as more and more people become un-employed.  And that means there isn’t enough time in the day to work on making matches between clients and candidates whose resumes they sought and the numerous resumes that come in – many of which aren’t in their area of specialty.  Recruiters do want to know about you, you just need a new way of getting in front of them. If sending unsolicited resumes isn’t going to work, there is something else you can do to get seen by hiring companies AND recruiters.  Fortunately it’s the same thing – networking.  Over the years, there have been hundreds of articles on the internet about networking but the current economical climate creates a whole new level of importance.  It’s no longer about networking on your own and if that doesn’t work out then you turn to a recruiter, it’s about networking even to get to the recruiter while simultaneously networking on your own to get to hiring managers.  To understand the basics of networking read The Practical Guide to Networking. Professional Networking Sites If you haven’t heard of LinkedIn.com, you need to pull up a browser and jump on immediately.  It’s the leading professional networking site that can put you in touch with many many people in your field. According to an article in Chief Executive Magazine online, membership in professional networking sites is expected to soar as the economic downturn continues, and a Time.com article notes that LinkedIn is signing up 1 new member every second.  That’s a lot of people out there networking where you are not. On business networking sites, you can join interest groups with whom you can network to find out who is hiring, ask a question to people in your network to find out what’s happening in your industry’s job market, and you can view job posting by companies whose employees are on the site.  You can also locate people at the hiring level for your specialization and introduce yourself to them.  Social-Networking Sites Believe it or not, social networking sites can be a very helpful job search tool.  Sites like Facebook have Marketplace sections where they list jobs, but more importantly, you can tap into your network of friends to spread the word about your job search.  The more people that know what you are looking for, the better the chance your name will come up in conversation at the right time.  People want to help. But remember, you have to be very careful about the content you put up on these sites because Social Networking Can Damage Your Job Search, If You Let It. Blogs According to BlogCatalog, there are 1,916 Career and Job Blogs.  Some of them useless and some of them gold.  If you search for your area of specialization, such as “engineer”, you will find blogs in your field.  Blogs are a great place to find out what is happening in your industry.  Connect with people in your field, look to see who is commenting on the blogs – are they working at a company you want to work for?  You can’t be afraid to introduce yourself. Helping Others Network A down economy is an even more important time to make sure you are helping others network as well.  Try to approach meeting anyone as an opportunity to learn something about an interesting person and maybe put two people in touch who can help one another.  Keeping eyes and ears open for opportunities to help connect other people will earn you points that you can redeem later but more importantly, it will make you feel good about yourself, your professionalism and your own career.  Networking is by no means new, but the economic landscape and technological developments have brought the methodology and importance to the forefront of career development.  Even if you are not currently looking for a job, in this economy, you should always be making contacts.  You never know, with the contacts that you make, you may be able to help a friend – or yourself.

Weird Laws of World

Laws are made by the government and other ruling agencies to maintain order in the society. Laws help people live their life freely and allow them to work, socialize, worship, dress, attain their aims and reach their goals. But sometimes the rules set by society and government are so weird that often people end up calling them ‘crazy laws’. There are several weird laws that are followed in the world. Let’s have a look at them one by one: In US, many people find the ‘21 and over’ rule quite weird. People who wish to purchase beer all days of the week may find it weird to see the liquor stores closed on Sundays. Also those people who love to stroll around with an uncorked wine bottle may feel weird to know that open alcohol bottles are not allowed in various areas. Another crazy law that does not make much sense is ‘Bring Cash and Coins to Des Moines’. It is illegal in Iowa to begin a tab at any bar. This law surprise many visitors from outside. As per Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BAFT), the word ‘refreshing’ cannot be utilized while describing alcohol drinks. That compels the consumers of alcohol to call beer as brisk, wine as reviving and gin as invigorating. You would certainly feel crazy after knowing that an underage student from abroad in Rome is forbidden from consuming alcohol even when they belong to a country where they satisfy the minimum drinking age requirement. Such kind of weird laws of the world makes it impossible for people to drink in other culture because they are actually bounded by weird laws governing the state. Drinking not allowed with Fishes: In Ohio, getting a fish drunk is strictly illegal. Eventually, the marine life in this city of America does not go by the maxim ‘drinks like a fish’. You can feed them worms but must keep your tequila bottle to yourself. In Pennsylvania, a man cannot buy alcohol until and unless he has a written permission from his wife. This has provided Pennsylvanian women more authority than men and is a reason behind increasing number of singles in the country. Now this law would definitely make you laugh. In Texas a standing person cannot take more than three sips of beer at a time but same is not true if they are stumbling round or falling over. Another Texas rule bans the complete collection of Encyclopedia Britannica as one of its volume details the homemade beer recipe. In UK, it is legal for pregnant women to urinate anywhere she likes. She can even request to urinate in a policeman’s hat. Some of these weird laws date back to old times and may not even have relevance today. But these laws still exist and are now the cause of our laughter and jokes.

A Guide To Project Management Career Levels

Project management careers earn you certain positions where you could exercise and maximize your best skills. There are a number of tasks the project manager may be able to do but what's critical for the most part is the managing of resources for huge projects. It's a big deal who does what for a strictly organized unit in which the managers coordinate with each other to come up with the best projects. It may mean managing software development, networking, IT conversions, and a lot more. A project man is one who is in charge of the execution of a project per se. Out of a hundred plans, the most effective as seen by the project man will be chosen. In carrying out one, the project man makes sure everything in the program is followed. Alterations may be considered provided that the project is volatile and adaptive to alternatives. The project man knows when to pick up a contingency plan and how to run the big thing while it is undertaking change. The master behind the scenes is the program man. He is initially the boss of the project until after it is ready for execution. Creating the program for the project, keeping track of the alterations, and performing program study and screening are the major responsibilities of the program man. This requires a broad range of creative and critical thinking. Like the screenplay maker of a movie, the program man is expected to think up something out of the ordinary without exceeding the boundaries set by standard. When everything else is settled and ready for show, the director takes charge of the dissemination of tasks to the different teams. A project becomes less strenuous given directions since you just have to depend on what the director says. The director exercises his executive powers in decision making and problem solving. This is perhaps the toughest level in the program management career looking at the sizes of projects sponsored by a lot of companies nowadays.
