More and more people who are on or near the traditional age of retirement are finding out the hard way that their retirement savings are just not going to cut it.  And to rely on Social Security is a gamble as it is unclear of the future of this entitlement. So these older workers are choosing to work past that trarditonal retirement age. But even though they make that decision they often don't get the support of the companies they work for. The companies want them out.  From these companies' perspectives, a younger workier costs less and can be shaped the way the companies' want.  Even though age discrimation is supposed to be illegal, it is something that is difficult to prove.  But it exists and older people are faced with the situation of income displacement.It is often a shame that companies look solely at the bottom line and not what older workers can provide.  They have many, many years of business experience.  While some may not adapt to an ever changing environment, most have been able to cope with these changes.  There have been plenty of crisis within their work life that they are sure to be an asset in helping a company cope with the situation.When an older worker gets laid off their chances of getting a new job, or at least one that pays the same as the displaced job, are much less than for a younger counterpart.  Many older workers find themselves having to move into their childrens' houses and that causes stress on the entire family.  There may seem like there are no alternatives to age discrimination.  The displaced worker often becomes depressed and left with few places to turnBut there are alternatives to age discrimination that displaced older workers can take upon themselves to implement. There internet is a great equalizer.  It has so many resources that can level the playing field.  From freelancing to ecommerce, these offer any older displaced worker alternatives to age discrimination.  It doesn't have to be just for older workers however.  Anyone can take advantage of these resources to generate income.  It is often a shift to the tradional methods that we are used to be it is credible.Often, when older workers seek out alternatives to age discrimination they find that it gives them freedom that they didn't get in the standard workplace.  They can set their own hours and usually only have to answer to themselves.  They can even work in their pajamas if they so choose.  It's liberating when you make those choices for yourself.
